Alison Page and Nik Lachajczak

The Message: The Story from the Shore for the Endeavour Voyage展览,从原住民的视角讲述了库克船长在澳洲东海岸航行的故事。

Preface
The Australian continent is vast and diverse – from red deserts to rainforest and beaches to bush. It has a long human history stretching from its First Peoples through to contemporary times. The exhibition explores the relationship between Australians and this land through a combination of ancient storytelling practices and contemporary art forms. With immersive experiences, unique art installations and totems from the Oceania continent, this is a cultural celebration unlike any other.

The exhibition includes a widescreen film and installations by Aboriginal artist and filmmaker Alison Page and Australian-Chinese artist Zhou Xiaoping. The Ochre and Sky film was created by filmmakers Alison Page and Nik Lachajczak of ZAKPAGE. It explores the relationship between people and the land in Australia. As we face global environmental challenges, Ochre and Sky invites us to find hope for the future by listening closely to the land and drawing on ancestral wisdom.

The installation accompanying it are Totem by Alice Page and Life and Land by Zhou Xiaoping. Zhou Xiaoping's Life and Land installation uses rice, the most important food in Chinese people's daily lives, as a medium and blends Chinese and Western art concepts with Australian Aboriginal art to express some of the similarities between the two ancient cultures of China and Australia, as well as the traditional practices that have endured for thousands of years, demonstrating the interconnectedness and importance of nature, life and caring for the land.

We are all part of Country.

We are all connected to the sky, the water and the land.

The animals, the plants and the stories of place have been sung and written through time.

From the moment we are born, the echoes of past generations and the energy of elemental forces start to fill our beings with the essence of Country.

In the Australian Aboriginal world, that connection is maintained through family and ancestral memory, as it is for most people. But it is also invigorated through ceremony and ritual, and through loving Country as another member of our shared ancient family. Because when we care for Country – the water, the land and the animals – Country will care for us.
——Alison Page

In 2020, ZAKPAGE created The Message: The Story from the Shore for the Endeavour Voyage exhibition at the National Museum of Australia, which tells the story of Captain Cook’s voyage up the east coast of Australia from the perspective of the Aboriginal people he encountered. ZAKPAGE are currently working with the Gumbaynggirr people in northern New South Wales to make a digital welcome to Country experience for the new Coffs Harbour Cultural and Civic Space.

Life and Land

Zhou Xiaoping

In this installation artwork, I use rice as a medium to portray the significance of land, nature, life and love for family. Rice is a favourite and familiar Chinese staple and has also become a popular source of food for Aboriginal peoples. Ochre is incorporated into the artwork to symbolise land, and the relationship between life and the earth. For the First Nations Peoples of Australia ‘our land is our life’.

Rice as an artistic medium also conveys a cross-cultural message about shared meanings that can be found in the accompaniments to everyday life. By using something that is simple and familiar, it is possible to feel the flow of dialogue and listening between two different cultures.

If we examine these two ancient cultures from an anthropological perspective, it is not difficult to find similarities. They both uphold strong family values, and for thousands of years have continued traditional customs and practices, such as the resourceful use of indigenous plants to produce medicines that are beneficial to the health of their people.

——Zhou Xiaoping
